Description

Nils Johan Ekdahl (27 April 1799 in Fågeltofta, Sweden – 20 December 1870 in Stockholm, Sweden) was a Swedish theologian, political writer and cultural historian.

Student in Lund in 1820, ordination as pastor in 1822, employed as a preacher in Stockholm in 1825. In his spare time, he devoted himself to historical and archaeological research, and traveled from 1827 to 1830 through the landscape of Norrland in the north of Sweden, about which he reports in his treatise Om vattuminskningen i norra poltrakterna (1865). In his last years of life Ekdahl was also a staunch supporter of the Icelandic theologian Magnús Eiríksson (1806–1881), of whom he translated two books into Swedish.

Description

You will find parts of the Greek and Roman collections along one side of the central hall. One section highlights the ancient mythology. Below are pottery and sculpture with motifs taken from the Greek myths, such as the deities Athena, Apollo and Artemis, and the heroes Achilles, Heracles, Orpheus and exciting adventures. Also the symposium, the Greek men's drinking, is depicted in a booth . Here you will find all the different parts of tableware and many images of Dionysos , the god of wine.

In lapidariet, the center hall stone gallery, you are face to face with the marble portraits of Roman emperors and individuals, as well as reliefs and altars for worship and remembrance of the deceased. (www.medelhavsmuseet.se, 2009-07-13, google translate)

Comments

Roman copy of a bronze statue from the fifth century B.C. attributed to Myron or Pythagoras.

Art historians Walter Amelung and Margareta Bieber identified this type of head as originally belonging to an athlete's body, of the type seen in a sculpture of Emperor Lucius Verus in the Vatican Museum, and that of a youth in Museo Torlonia. Reconstruction photo in Antonsson p 45.
