Egypten 5.13 :: The family
- Object description
The family usually consisted of a husband, wife and children. Ancestors were also part of the family and given special memorial monuments.
Few people reached old age. Women lived on average until 30 years of age, men slightly longer. The most common cause of death was infectious diseases and many women died in childbirth. Infant mortality was high and there were many dangers. Charms were used to protect against some of them.
To have children was important. They could take care of their aging parents and eventually, tend to their funerary cult. The women in Deir el-Medina prayed for children to the goddess of Hathor in the chapel dedicated to her in Deir el-Bahri, not far from the village. Archaeologists have here found votive offerings in the form of thousands of female figurines.
Children were brought up to take care of different chores. The sons inherited their fathers’ profession while the daughters learned how to manage a household. However, there was still time for fun and games.
