Egypten 7.3 :: Gods and cults
- Object description
Increasing contact with the rest of the Mediterranean world led to encounters with other religions and gods. For the Greeks, religion stood above national boundaries and they soon found counterparts to their own gods among the gods of the Egyptians. The gods of Osiris and Apis were merged into a new and popular god by the name of Serapis. In some places, local cults enjoyed a revival.
However, the Egyptian king lost much of his divinity, perhaps as a result of the many foreign rulers. The king was no longer seen as a guarantee for order and tradition. In his place, the priesthood, able to interpret and understand ancient texts, was given greater influence and respect.
The Jewish immigration grew during the Late Period, especially in the Delta. The largest Jewish population was found in Alexandria.
