Palettes of graywacke sandstone are common findings finds in Predynastic graves. The palettes were used for grinding pigments used,pigments, which among other thing were useds, as eye makeup. The design of the palettes evolved from simple rhombus rhomboid shapes, during Naqada I, to various animal shapes during Naqada II. A two-headedDouble bird heads wereas a frequently occurring design, not only on palettes but also on hair combs and headdresseshair decoration.
Towards the end of Naqada II, palettes were often used for ceremonial purposes. Images were engraved or carved out to illustrate how the sovereign ruler hunted dangerous animals or triumphed on the battlefield - examples of social order prevailing over the wild and chaotic.
