(Gunwi Insubu).
This buncheong bowl with gently curved, slanting sides is decorated with a stamped and inlaid white slip design. The design on the interior of the bowl can be divided into four sections, which are separated by concentric rings. A chrysanthemum flower surrounded by a register with a linear pattern ("ring-punched pattern") and a band of stylized butterflies form the innermost section, followed by the second section with a band of stylized lotus petals. The walls are covered with a wide register of the same linear pattern, and the composition ends with the last section, with a band of stylized "grass" motif along the rim. The design on the exterior surface consists of a grass pattern band below the rim, followed by a wide register of the linear pattern, a band with stylized lotus petals and a band of small chrysanthemum flowers that encircle the bowl right above the foot. Within the linear patterned register on the exterior, there is an inscription inlaid in white slip of five characters: (Gunwi Insubu). This means that the bowl was produced in Gunwi, in today's Gyeongsang Province, in the southeastern part of Korea, for the government office called Insubu. Thus, it was produced for use at the court. The last two characters 壽 and 府 appear to have been swapped, probably a mistake by a workman who could not read Chinese characters at the ceramic kilns. The bowl is coated with a clear, greenish-tinged glaze. There are marks from four clay pads on the foot.
The origin of the inscription can be traced back to an official decree of the year 1417, which stated that all ceramics goods produced for government offices should be inscribed with the name of the respective government office as a measure to avoid the loss of goods through misplacement, theft or damage. An office called Insubu was established in 1400 for the crown prince, during the reign of King Jeongjong, and was concerned with military affairs. It continued and was operated under the name Insubu between 1418 and 1455, and 1457 and 1556. The extant buncheong ceramics produced for the Insubu office are usually inscribed together with the name of the place of production (mostly located in the Gyeongsang Province) and decorated with stamped patterns typical for buncheong wares of the 15th century.
