Rendered in ink on ramie, this painting depicts a sleeping sparrow sitting on a bamboo branch in winter. The bird was painted in differing shades of ink without outline (also called the "boneless style"). The bamboo stalk and twigs describe a sweeping line painted in thin, fluid strokes of ink wash; the bamboo leaves are represented with broad brushstrokes in a dark tone of ink. The background is coloured in a very light ink wash leaving the areas above the branches blank to represent snow. In the left lower corner of the painting, there are the signature "Changgang" (sobriquet of Jo Sok, 1595-1668) in ink and two square relief seals.
Jo Sok was a scholar official of the mid-Joseon period who was renowned for excelling in the three disciplines poetry, calligraphy and painting, also called the "Three Perfections." The subjects of his paintings include plants, flowers and birds (Korean: hwajodo) as well as landscapes. He painted in a distinctly Korean style and his landscape paintings had an influence on the development of the true-view landscape painting tradition.
