This impressive ethnographical collection from the North American Indians, e.g. on the Northwest coast, BC, Canada; in the US Southwest; on the Plains of the USA, has been brought together by the Swedish anatomist and physical anthropologist Gustav Retzius (1842-1919). The collection is a result of Retzius´ trip to USA and Canada in 1893 (see Gustav Retzius, Bilder från Nordamerika,
letters-travel accounts published in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet 1893-94). G. Retzius visited the World´s Columbus Exposition in Chicago, 1893, where I saw the ethnographical-anthropological sections with not the least performing American Indians from the Northwest coast. Retzius met the prominent anthropologist Frans Boaz who provided Retzius with field contacts in the US Southwest and on the Northwest coast of Canada. One of the contacs was the collector in the field Fillip Jacobsen (who later published an article in Ymer, the journal of the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (SSAG). Also, Retzius received objects, to be included in the collection, after his return to Sweden. Parts of the great Retzius-collection have been on display numerous of times since the beginning of the 1900s, most recently in a section of its own in the museum´s present North America exhibition, opened in October 200, curated by the Swedish Northwest coast expert Carl Johan Gurt, Stockholm University.
