- Object description
Schackspel, med 32 pjäser snidade i trä, i en ask av trä. Asken har ett lock av trä som skjutes i sidled då man öppnar asken.(AA)
"The pieces, which are old and worn, are exceedingly well made, carved in wood and painted in several colours. The two sides are distinguished by the colour of the foot, red or green. To the set belongs a receptacle box and a "board" of Chinese paper with 64 free-hand drawn squares.
The `red side´ men: Prince or chief, mounted on a horse led by a groom. The former wearing a Manchu hat of office with peacock feathers. Tiger, in a threatening pose, with head forward-bent between its paws. Camels, 2, with tall humps inclining in different directions; one of them with a suckling foal. Horses, 2, one with saddle-cloth and saddle. Both painted yellow, with long, dark, tail and mane. Chariots, 2, each with horse and driver. Their hoods are high and arched, the wheels immense. Wrestlers, two couples. Seated man, flanked by a high box. Seated man reading or writing. Standing men, four in number; one of these has once had an additonal figure of his side on the same foot. The last-mentioned eight figures, who are of smaller size than the foregoing, are the equivalents of pawns.
The `green side´men: Prince or chief, sitting on a chair with a curved back. In front of him is a table, supporting a heaped dish(?); at the ends of the table stand two officials in their hats of office with peacock plumes. One of them holds before him a `silver shoe´. Lion, sitting on its haunches. Camels, 2, one is a male in the rutting-season, with its short tail thrown up against the rear hump. The second figure is of recent manufacture and roughly carved. Horses, 2, one is a mare with a suckling foal, and the other a stallion with a large piece of cloth laid over its head. Chariots, 2, so-called Peking cars, a type that also occurs in Mongolia at princely courts and in the temples. One of them has a man standing in front of it, at the horse´s head, busying himself with the harness. The other once had a similar figure, though it is now missing. Wrestlers, two couples; Violin players, 2, Harper, Fluteplayer, Seated men, 2. the last-mentioned eight figures corresponds to pawns. (Montell.1939. Ethnos no.2. s.88f)
"In Mongolian chess the following recurs: the sides or parties are distinguished by the colours- red and green; the squares of the board are all of one colour; the castle or (rook) corresponds to the chariot. ...The mongols having proper, carved and painted pieces, (till skillnad från i kinesiskt schack) which are placed in the squares and not on the dividing lines (också till skillnad från kinesiskt schack)...The queen of European chess is represented by a tiger or a lion. (Montell.1939. Ethnos no 2. s.97.)
