Object description

The National Museum of the American Indian bildades 2004 och utgör en den av Smithsonian Institution. Museet finns på tre platser: National Museum of the American Indian i National Mall (Washington, D.C., öppnade 2004), George Gustav Heye Center i New York City (2 våningar i Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House), och Cultural Resources Center in Maryland.

Dess föregångare var Museum of the American Indian som innehöll Heye Foundations samlingar. Samlingen omfattar mer än 800.000 föremål, samt ett fotografiskt arkiv över 125.000 bilder. Samlingen sattes samman av George Gustav Heye (1874-1957) under en 54-årsperiod, med början 1903. Han reste över hela Nord-och Sydamerika och samlde föremål. Heyes museum, New York öppnade 1922 och låg då vid Audubon Terrace. Det stängde 1994.
