Object description

"The suona body is of wood, approx. 45 cm long, with regular outward scaloping and seven frontal finger-holes plus one thumb-hole. Its bore is conical and it has a range of about one-and-a-half octaves. A very small reed (made of river reed) is bound with thin copper wire and mounted on a hollow metal staple, which in turn is inserted into the upper end of the body. Loosely fitted over the lower end is a large flaring metal bell. In performance the player's mouth completely encloses the reed without touching it. A fair amount of air pressure is needed in order to activate thereed, and experienced players usually use circular breathing to produce the characteristic uninterupted tone." cit.
