- Object description
Runt, flatbottnat fat med handtag. Handtaget slutar i en spets, dekorerad med mönster utskurna i relief. Fatets undersida har reliefdekor i geometriska mönster och är bemålad i mörkrött, vitt och svart. Sannolikt använt inom hushållet. Enligt Generalkatalogen som matskål. Enligt Rockefeller (se nedan) för att servera rostade sago-bollar.
Rockefeller skriver:
"On the Casuarinen Coast, in the area south of the estuary of the Faretsj River, roasted balls of sago are served in a flat wooden bowl, or tray. The outside of the tray bottom and occasionally the rim are decorated with a relief design which seems to be purely geometric ornament. It may seem strange to decorate the exterior of a tray. But as these trays stand on a kind of wooden lattice two or three feet above the family fireplace, and as the Asmat sit on the floor, it is the decorated exterior of the tray that is most clearly visible. Especially elaborately-carved trays have a pair of handles that represent a male and a female ancestor figure who hold the tray between their outspread legs. We may assume that this posture symbolizes fertility, and that the food on the tray has been engendered, so to speak, by the ancestors". Rockefeller 1967 sid 32.
