Object description

Emil Riebeck, född 11 juni 1853, död 22 juni 1885, tysk upptäcktsresande, mineralog, etnolog och naturforskare. Han föddes i Preusslitz av Carl Adolf Riebeck, en industrimagnat. Han reste till Nordafrika och Arabien flera gånger och reste 1881 med Georg Schweinfurth på en expedition till Socotra. Han reste med Adolf Bastian till Chittagongs kullar 1882.

1884 finansierade han Gottlob Krauses expedition till Nigerfloden, Benuefloden och Tchadsjön.

Riebeck samlade en omfattande samling artefakter från östra Asien, Indien, Arabien och Afrika. Mineralet riebeckit är uppkallat efter honom. Också en art av Socotran-ödla, Haemodracon riebeckii, namnges till hans ära.
