- Object description
- This set is a traditional Korean string-instrument / chordophone called "haegeum (해금)" in Korean. The bow is made of horsehair and light orangeish brown coloured wooden rod. Both ends of the horsehair are fixed with green ribbons onto the metal tip of the bow at one end and onto the leather belt at the other. The sound box is made of hard wood and hollow with one side blocked. The neck connected to the soundbox is made of bamboo with two silk strings attached from the pegs to the bottom of the soundbox and is slightly bent on top while the lower end is covered with an ivory coloured ring. Both soundbox and neck are dark brown in colour. A wide brown leather strap is tied between the silk strings and the lower peg to fix them in place, which has a leaf-shaped mother-of-pearl ornament attached onto it. It is held vertically on the knee of the performer and played by passing the bow with horsehair horizontally between the silk strings.
