The Maracá indians of Colombia comprise on e of the seventeen sub-tribes of the Yuko (Yukpa, Yupa in Venezuela), a Carib tribe which inhabits the mountains of the Colombian-Venezualan border region, consisting of the Sierra de Perijá, the Serranía de Valledupar, and the Serranía de los Motilones, between 9 and 10, 3 N. At the present time the Maracá occypy a marginal niche along the headwaters of the Quebrada Socorpas, one of the major tributaries of the Río Maracas, where a Capuchin mission was established in 1961.
