Abel Assefa is Director at Yimtubezina Museum and Cultural Center.
For the last ten years, he has been working as expert of Heritage Conservation & Management and Archeologist at the Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (ARCCH). He has participated and presented research papers at various conferences such as the 20th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (ICES20) in 2018 and Creative Ethiopia’s 10th International Conference on the History of Art and Architecture in 2015 held at Mekele University. Abel is also a freelance researcher and consultant on Ethiopian Art, Culture and Heritage.
A multitalented professional, he also practices photography and is trained in painting. Abel has been involved in curating and organizing several exhibitions in Addis Ababa. Most recently, he was the curator for The Wax and Gold of Hairstyle in Ethiopia project that was jointly organized by Goethe-Institute, Frobenius Institute, Jinka University and other partner institutes. The photographic exhibition was displayed at the Addis Ababa Museum from May 25th to June 9th, 2021, as well as at the South Omo Research Institute in Jinka since May 22nd, 2022.
Abel has a BSc in Heritage Conservation from Mekele University and an MA in Archeology and Heritage Management from Addis Ababa University. He has earned numerous certificates and diplomas in trainings related to his field and is certified in Disaster Risk Management for Cultural Heritages from Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and Wood Conservation Technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
