Object description: Flat-bottomed oinochoe. Lid: trefoil shaped with knob. Tree-foil mouth, tall, thin neck with ridge; broad band handle from mouth to shoulder; shoulder to upper body rounded; lower body cylindrical; wide, flat base. Hard, yellowish to greenish clay; semi-lustrous, yellowish to greenish slip; dark brown and purple paint. Incised decoration. Lid coated, surface somewhat flaky. Mouth and neck bear traces of dark brown paint; handle coated with diluted brown paint; shoulder panel: row of panthers and sirens facing centrally placed siren; filling ornaments: incised and blobby rosettes; body panel: row of panther, goats, grazing deer and lions facing central scene with antithetically placed, sitting griffins and man in knee-lauf position. Man wearing belt and sword. Filling ornaments: as above. Lower body encircled by broad band; base rays, partly faded.

Study Gallery

Description: Upstairs, in interaction with the Baghdad Cafe, opened in February 2009, the upper gallery. A rich variety of objects retrieved from the museum's storerooms, many of them shown for the first time. A series of booths filled to the brim with beautiful vases functions as a traditional study collection of ancient ceramics. Other booths highlights the thematic elements of the ancient world: the subject of everyday and festive, and images of gods, humans and animals. Äldre bilder Anna Stalteri; An oinochoe (pl. oinochoai, alternatively spelled oenochoe/oenochoai) is a single-handled vessel, more specifically a jug, usually taller than it is wide. They come in many different shapes and forms, with variations in profile, mouth-type and handle-form. They functioned as pouring vessels for wine and have taken their name from the Greek words “oinos” (wine) and “cheo” (I pour). Miniature versions were often placed in children’s graves.
