- Object description
Pyxis: plain rim; short neck; globular body; rounded handles on shoulder; tall, hollow stem; splaying base. Buff clay; buff slip; lustrous, brown to black paint; added red. Neck painted; one red band and two black ones encircling shoulder; large figured frieze on upper and mid-body: on one side a panther, a siren and a sphinx, on the other side three sirens - incised details; incised blobby rosettes and blobs as filling ornaments in the frieze; on lower body a black zone between narrow red and black bands; stem painted; two bands on base.
Lid: rounded handle at top centre; domed lid. Buff clay; lustrous, dark to light brown paint; added maroon. Bars and a circle on handle; on top centre two rows of rays and two horizontal lines; broad band encircling top centre; further below two rows of dots and three bands; on edge three brown and one maroon band and two rows of dots; bottom reserved.
