- Object description
- Volute krater. Moulded rim; concave neck; piriform body, tapering downwards; vertical, raised handles with large volutes from rim to shoulder; four plastic bird protomes on shoulder; moulding at junction between body and stem; short stem; grooved disc base with concave top. Brown clay; black glaze; red wash; added white, yellow and red paint. A: on the volutes Io masks with white skin and yellowish brown hair; egg-pattern on rim and below a wave pattern – red wash on reserved areas; below a pattern of yellow dots alternating with bars; further below a rosette and dot border; on neck a winged siren holding a wreath and a phiale (?), flanked by laurel branches; in the upper field to the right an ivy leaf and flowers; on shoulder (between the bird protomes) a reserved panel with tongues in the upper register and dotted egg-pattern below; on body a white naiskos where a woman in white chiton, holding a white fan, is seated on a Ionic capital; behind her a suspended, white fillet; wave pattern on the stereobate; to the right of the naiskos a woman in kekryphalos, chiton, earrings, necklace, bracelets and white shoes; she is holding a wreath in her left hand and a phiale with a white fillet in her right; to the left a naked youth with a himation and white wreath; he is holding a mirror in his right hand and a wreath of rosettes in his left; behind him a tambourine as filling ornament; B: on the volutes Io masks with dark brown hair; black dots on rim and wave pattern below – red wash on reserved areas; further below a laurel branch with white berries; a large palmette and coiling tendrils on neck; on shoulder a reserved panel (between the bird protomes) with tongues in the upper register and wave pattern below; on body a grave stele decorated with white borders and white and black fillets; on both sides of the stele a seated woman in chiton, kekryphalos, earrings, necklace, bracelets and white shoes; both women hold mirrors in their right hands; the woman to the left holds a cluster of grapes in her left hand while the one to the right holds up a phiale with white offerings and a white fillet attached to it; tambourines and rosettes with added white and yellow as filling ornaments; large palmettes and tendrils beneath handles; a border of meanders and saltier squares encircles lower body; junction between body and stem red; edge of base and underside reserved.

Dear Sir or Madam, I would need the image of the siren at the neck of MM 1965:045 (3100841 Bild 2) in high resolution. I would like to illustrate an archaeological article to be published in the Festschrift for Árpád Nagy, former director of antiquities in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
