- Object description
- Grooved, everted rim in two degrees; short, concave neck; moulding at base of neck; bulging shoulder; tall, rounded body; rolled-up handles; ridge at junction between body and base; disc base. Red clay; black glaze; added white. Egg-pattern on rim; tongue pattern on shoulder; A: bearded Dionysos in fillet, chiton and himation stands frontally, facing left, and holds a thyrsos in his right hand; to the left a maenad in sakkos and chiton, holds a torch and a staff (?); to the right another maenad in sakkos and chiton, with uplifted head, holding a stick (?); B: three maenads: the first one wears a sakkos, is draped in a himation and holds a cup; the one in the middle wears a white wreath, chiton and himation and carries a thyrsos; the third maenad in sakkos and chiton is turned back towards the two other women; above and below handles three large and one small, connected palmette fans and tendrils; a meander circles lower body beneath figures; junction between body and base maroon; lower edge of base and underside reserved.
