- Object description
- Neck amphora. Rounded, everted rim; splaying neck; a ridge at upper neck and one at junction between neck and shoulder; sloping, bulging shoulder; triple, vertical handles from neck to shoulder; piriform body, tapering downwards; disc base. Brownish red clay; black glaze; ochre wash; added red and white; incisions. Rim top, neck, inside of handles, body and underside reserved; on both sides of neck a chain of double lotuses and palmettes, connected above and below by arcs; at base of neck on both sides alternating red and black tongues; A: Herakles, in the centre, holds on to the crested helmet of an amazon to the right and is about to strike her with his club; Herakles stands in profile with the club high above his head, wears the lion’s skin and a short, red chiton, and a bow and quiver on his back; the amazon is kneeling to the right and turns her head back, downwards; she holds a spear in her right hand and a large, circular shield with a device in the shape of a white club in her left – her right arm and part of her face hidden by the shield; her skin is white and she wears a short chiton, a cloak and greaves; below Herakles is a large stone, perhaps a filling ornament; to the left of Herakles is an other amazon, moving out of the scene; she holds a bow in her right hand and a pick in her left, and a quiver hangs from her belt; she has white skin and wears a short, pleated chiton with decorated neck-piece and a pointed cap with long flaps; B: Herakles, in the centre, is flanked by two centaurs; Herakles holds on to the centaur to his right and is about to strike him with his club; he wears a pleated chiton and the lion’s skin; the left arm and part of the back of the centaur is covered by an animal skin, and he holds abranch in his right hand; the other centaur is facing the fighting couple; he holds a branch and a white stone; a stone is lying on the ground below both centaurs. Black base line encircles the body below figures; beneath and beside handles four connected palmettes and three lotus flowers frame a large, central dot; on lower body a chain of lotus buds, framed by double bands above and below; further below a zone of rays and a black band; reserved band on base top.
