- Object description
- Trefoil mouth; raised, vertical, ribbed handle from mouth to shoulder; on rim a disc on either side of handle; a small plate on inside of mouth between the discs; short neck with a fillet at upper part; moulding at junction between neck and shoulder; ovoid body; low conical base. Reddish brown clay; yellowish brown slip; dark brown to black paint; added red and white; incisions. Painted: outside of handle, inside and outside of mouth, base; a painted cross on plate at inside of mouth; a gorgoneion on both discs; a chain of lotus buds and palmettes on neck; the body is divided into four friezes by double encircling bands. A: on shoulder six men in short chitons and winged boots moving to the right — the first man (Apollon) carries a bow and arrow, while the three central men carry spears and the last two have axes; the fourth man wears a brimmed hat; the last man in the row turns his head back and has a decorated chiton; three tall and heavily armed warriors approach from the right; between Apollon and the first warrior a small figure standing on her knees (Gaia?) and lifting up her arms. B: on mid-body an animal frieze: in the centre a seated feline turned to the left, followed by a griffin, a panther, a sphinx, a lion, a griffin, a panther and a sphinx — all moving to the left; a few filling ornaments in the shape of blobs and incised palmettes. C: a double chain of lotus flowers and palmettes. D: base rays. Underside reserved.
