- Object description
- Moulded, everted rim; splaying neck; sloping shoulder; rounded body; two horizontal, rounded handles below shoulder and one vertical, rounded handle from rim to shoulder; disc base. Red clay; red wash; black glaze on the exterior, except for a reserved area on the inside of each horizontal handle and one immediately above the base with black rays; black glaze also on the interior of the rim and neck; added maroon and white. At base of neck alternating black and red tongues, below which (on the shoulder) nine men are depicted in the figured scene, two of which are engaged in a game of boxing, the others - both athletes and draped men - are watching; on the main scene four warriors wearing armour and Corinthian helmets (two feathered) are fighting with spears, one man lies on the ground, wearing a feathered Corinthian helmet and holding a shield; the warriors hold shields with decorations, two of which are visible, depicting a tripod and a temple respectively; the men are flanked on either side by a woman wearing a peplos and holding out her white-painted arms; the panel is framed to the right and left by vertical branches of ivy leaves between lines.
