- Object description
- On the lid a reclining chubby female figure in frontal posture is depicted; her head is turned upwards with the hair parted in the middle and tied at the back in a knot; she wears a diadem with painted decoration and earrings with a central disc and three elongated pendants each, a thick twisted torques round the neck and a ring on the left ring-finger; the figure wears a cloak covering the body and a tunic tied under the breasts with a girdle; the folds of the garment are densely rendered; in the right hand she holds a pomegranate, while the left lies horizontally on two stiff, undecorated cushions. Faint traces of polychromy: black on hair, red on the diadem and the right earring, yellow ochre on the pomegranate. The chest has relief decorations on three sides (the missing back was most likely undecorated): the front relief has an upper moulding with a projecting cornice and a narrow fillet with cable pattern; the base moulding is plain; on either side stands a fluted pilaster with composite Ionic capitals and profilated bases; these architectural decorations frame the central motif , a Scylla with nude upper body, vegetal skirt, fish-tail legs and large plumed wings; the Scylla holds an oar diagonally in both her hands; the side reliefs are framed by plain lists on three sides; the central motifs on them consists on both sides of a vase (a krater) with a long, wide neck, elongated S-shaped volute handles, fluted body and a high fluted foot with a horizontal profile fillet. Made out of Volterran tufa.
