Object description: Fine black fabric with glossy surface; plastic and incised decoration; trefoil mouth with sieve; band handle from rim to shoulder; sharp angle between mouth and neck; neck tapering slightly upwards; piriform body; small conical ring base. Incised decoration: a palmette and geometrical pattern on handle; on neck a standing winged figure flanked by two sphinxes; animal frieze on shoulder: griffon and grazing deer antithetically placed with a branch in front of them; a palmette on either side of handle attachment; on body vertical lines between groups of horizontal lines; Etruscan inscription on lower body below which are rays down to the base; mouldings with corded decoration at the junctions between mouth and neck and neck and body.

Description: Upstairs, in interaction with the Baghdad Cafe, opened in February 2009, the upper gallery. A rich variety of objects retrieved from the museum's storerooms, many of them shown for the first time. A series of booths filled to the brim with beautiful vases functions as a traditional study collection of ancient ceramics. Comments

An oinochoe (pl. oinochoai, alternatively spelled oenochoe/oenochoai) is a single-handled vessel, more specifically a jug, usually taller than it is wide. They come in many different shapes and forms, with variations in profile, mouth-type and handle-form. They functioned as pouring vessels for wine and have taken their name from the Greek words “oinos” (wine) and “cheo” (I pour). Miniature versions were often placed in children’s graves.
