lamp

- Object description
- Mouldmade, plastic lamp in the form of a ship. Wide and flat-bottomed, the prominent keel and bilge-strakes having indications of sunken bolts. The wales and rubbing-strakes are decorated with relief patterns: hatchings, tendrils, chevrons, leaves, loops and studs. The top has a raised, cabled edge. The deck is concave, the main area is taken up with a representation of a lamp of a Hayes Type II, surrounded by branches and leaves in relief, and two circles containing studded crosses. The wick-hole is at the point of the bow; adjacent to which, and covering the wick-hole area of the Hayes Type II ‘lamp’, is a bust of Christ in a square frame surrounded with a coil of rope. The stern area is divided from the deck area by a row of studs between ridges. It is pierced by two framed square openings (the filling holes) and has a studded Sacred Monogram in relief. There is a ring handle at the stern. The Hayes Type II ‘lamp’ has a knotted edge, a triangular-shaped handle at the rear, a wick-hole channel, a shoulder which frame is decorated with the head of the Twelve Apostles, and a discus with a moulded Sacred Monogram between two filling-holes. Brick-red clay, traces after oil on surface.
