lamp

- Object description
- Mouldmade lamp; circular body with convex profile; slightly raised base, surrounded with a groove; within that a planta pedis. Short, rounded nozzle. At the rear a vertical, ring-handle with two grooves on the upper part of its edge. The sloping shoulder is separated from the discus by a circular groove; a small circle is impressed into the shoulder on each side of the nozzle. An air-hole is pierced near the edge of the discus. The concave discus with asymmetrically located opening, shows Victoria hovers to left, fully draped. In the crook of her left arm she has a palm-branch; in her right hand she holds out circular shield (probably with a New Year greeting on it, but now this is lost). Scattered in the field are New Year gifts: a date, a fig, a fig-bundle, and three coins, one of them with a Janus head, the other two are too worn to identify. (Probably one is a Victoria and the other a caduceus with clasped hands.) Creamy-buff clay; no slip.
