Friedrich Wilhelm Spiegelthal, born October 15, 1829, Paderborn, Westphalie, Germany (then Prussia), deceased May 13, 1897, Cathédrale 2 / 42 - Smyrne, Izmir, Turkey. He was Swedish-Norwegian vice consul in Smyrna 1856-1887; consul 1887-1895.
Friedrich Wilhelm Spiegelthal emigrated to the United States in 1846. In 1850 he applied for and got US citizenship. A story in the family says he was chased by native americans and got caught by them. He was "partially scalped" but got rescued. His US passport mentions “a scar over his eye”. He left for Smyrna soon after this. According to the family, his scar was painful in the cold Northern climate. This might have been the reason as to why he emigrated to Smyrna, but also that one of his brothers, Ludvig Peter, an amateur archaeologist, was the Prussian Consul there.
He married September 29, 1855, Sainte Marie - Smyrne, Izmir, TURKEY, to Caroline Fonton 1818-1891. Father to Marianne (1856-) and John Henri Etienne (1857-).
