- Object description
- Portrait bust of an army officer wearing a paludamentum cloak over his left shoulder. Part of upper arms of most of chest included. Narrow, oval face with deep-set eyes and pronounced cheek-bones. Straight nose. Thin lips. Hair combed down over the forehead. Hollowed back furnished with a support. Between the bust proper and the socle, is a small plate, originally probably labelled with the painted name of the man represented. The composition is highly reminiscent of busts of the emperor Trajan (98-117), thus suggesting a dating to around the turn of the first century AD.
