- Object description
Large pitcher with lid, once completed with a miniature vase on knob. High slightly concave neck, ovoid body and broad strap handle. Ledge rim for domed lid with central knob. Two connecting struts between handle and neck. Reddish-yellow clay with shiny reddish-brown to brownish-black paint. Decorated with bars on rim, on neck horizontal zones of opposing, cross-hatched triangles with dotted lozenge chain in between; hatched meander; hatched step meander; dotted lozenge chain; and checker-board zone.
On body starting at shoulder, a dotted lozenge chain. Thereafter a metopal zone with hatched battlement meander in wide, central metope opposite handle, flanked by the following series of decorated panels: double-stacked chevrons, hatched swastika, chevrons, lozenge star with checked center in a hatched frame, chevrons, hatched swastika, chevrons, hatched quatrefoil. Below this zone a dotted lozenge chain, hatched meander, dotted lozenge chain, hatched stop meander, dotted lozenge chain, row of one-legged birds, vertical wiggles and zig-zag bands.
The handle is decorated with panels of hatched birds and hatched quatrefoils. Neck behind handle solidly painted. Clay rolls on either side of handle dotted. Lid and pedestal for vase on lid banded. Thick, painted band on inside of mouth.
