Description: The Islamic exhibition and Islamic art
The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities also has the largest and only permanent exhibition of Islamic art in Sweden. The collection shows objects in ceramics, metal, wood and textiles as well as book illustrations and miniature painting. It elucidates Islamic art from AD 600 to AD 1900.
Islamic art is a world rich in shapes and colours both on the objects and in the décor. Arabesques and star patterns, calligraphic script, and the narrative pictures, illustrations to poetry, culture and science characterize the art. Islamic art and culture are heirs in southern and the eastern Mediterranean area to the Hellenistic, Roman, Persian and older Christian cultures.

The jug has a squat globular body, a high concave neck with a flared rim and a low foot. It has underglaze painted in a bright blue, a thick opaque red and a diluted turquoise-green on a white slip. The design outlined in dark blue appears in two horizontal registers alternating tulips and carnations, referring to the floral style of the Iznik ceramics of the AH 10th–11th / AD 16th–17th centuries. However, as well as an obviously different kind of slip and glaze, the motifs are simplified and schematically executed. The handle and the narrow bands edging the floral depictions are ornamented with geometrical patterns. The jug is marked under the foot with a crescent and an asterisk.

Unlike Iznik wares of the 'quatre fleurs' style of the 10th–11th / 16th–17th centuries, this jug is marked under the foot. The object was dated according to similar marks, which are known from Ottoman ceramics of the 13th / 19th century, for example, from Istanbul.

How Object was obtained:

Purchased from the collection of F. R. Martin in 1898.

How provenance was established:

A vase housed in the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities has similar decoration and a mark which is signed 'Istanbul' within the crescent. However, it was not possible to identify the workshop to which the mark of a crescent and asterisk on the bottom belongs.

mark under base, halfmoon and star, could indicate Yildiz Kiosk factory, late 19th early 20th century (Lane 1957 & 1971, 114-115).
