- Object description
- The remains of skeleton Jb are relatively well preserved, their size readily testifying to being those of a small child. With both the cranium, maxilla and mandible with teeth intact, it has been possible to achieve a satisfying age estimation. Both permanent and deciduous teeth are present, and these indicate a dental phase 13, meaning that this individual must have died at between five and nine years of age. The left femur was also measured, with its 260mm in length indicating a child of merely five years of age at death. Most long bone epiphyses as well as the different parts of the coxae are unfused, which supports this age estimation further. As the ischiopubic ramus starts to fuse at the age of five, this individual was most likely no more than five years of age at death. The cranial sutures are open and the skull vault is light and thin. The left eye socket shows some fine pitting, suggesting a mild case of cribra orbitalia. No sex estimation was attempted due to the tender age of the remains. Hietanen, Linnea. p.30
