Sixten George Mauritz Strömbom, born May 24, 1888 died 2 April 1983, was a Swedish art historian and museum director. Son of traffic inspector at SJ Carl Eddy and Elin Ehinger. Married (1) 1912-23 with Greta Holmbäck (f.1870), daughter of Professor Frithiof Holmgren and Ann Margret Holmgren (born Tersmeden), (2) in 1928 with Greta Lindberg (1886-1978), daughter of actor August Lindberg. A cousin of him is the art historian Nils Eddy and a niece art historian Ragnhild Bostrom.
Sixten Eddy became fil. dr. at Göteborg University in 1916 on a thesis on the artist Lorens Pasch the Younger. He was curator at the National Museum of 1919-49 and in 1948 received the title of professor. 1948-55 he was professor of art history at Gothenburg University. At the National Museum 1919-44, he was director of its department of Castle collections and deposits and 1944-49 director of the sculpture and painting department.
1915 Eddy took the initiative to the establishment of the Swedish portrait archive 1935-42 and published a comprehensive index of Swedish portärttkonst in three bands. He has published directories of portrait collections of the Gripsholm and Eric's castle. In 1930 he took the initiative to the National Association for the fine arts.
He became Honorary Doctor Juris in 1938 and was elected in 1949 in the Royal Science and Letters, Society of Gothenburg. (wikipedia, 2010-07-08)
