New Egypt, 10, Egypt after the pharaohs :: Egypt after the pharaohs
- Object description
Christianity reached Egypt early and spread across the country during the third and fourth centuries. The new doctrine of Christianity marked the end of Ancient Egyptian religion and many of its associated customs.
A number of ancient beliefs survived nonetheless: The perception of resurrection and eternal life, the divine virgin birth and the conception of the Mother of God and child. Even the traditional moral beliefs, based on Maat, are found in both Christianity and Islam.
Islam arrived in Egypt with the Arab Conquest in the seventh century AD. Jews and Christians were allowed to practice their faith under the patronage of the new Muslim rulers. The degree of acceptance and tolerance varied however and many Egyptians converted to Islam, either out of conviction or for financial and professional reasons. Islam became the religion of the rulers and eventually, the majority.
