Bread, beer and fish 1

- Object description
Wish lists found in tombs include food such as antelope and duck. However, this was very different from the everyday food of most Egyptians. Beef was a rare delicacy. The staple food was bread and beer. Only the upper society drank wine. Lentils, beans and fish were an important source of protein.
Fishing was done with nets laid out from simple boats. The fishermen then hit the water surface with canes, scaring the fish into their nets. Larger fish was harpooned. The Egyptians also ate water birds and their eggs as well as tubers from reed plants.
In the gardens were cultivated both doum and date palm trees as well as olives, pomegranates, melons, sycamore figs, grapes and various types of vegetables.
The food was boiled, fried or grilled and seasoned with honey, cumin, garlic, dill, coriander and fennel. Food was also pickled. Oil was extracted from olives, flax and sesame seeds, moringa (horseradish tree) and balanites seeds.
