Egypten 5.8 :: Sketches from the Valley of the Kings
- Object description
Besides the thousands of texts, a large number of drawings on ostraca, fragments of limestone, have been found at Deir el-Medina. These fragments are unique examples of free creativity in a society where art was otherwise ideologically driven.
Many of the drawings are linked to the work in the royal tombs. They are exercises that show kings, gods and hieroglyphs. Others are new versions of traditional motifs such as the king in his chariot with the addition of one or two details. Some are totally new and free creations.
A recurring motif is animals in situations normally associated with humans. Perhaps they were used to illustrate stories that had not survived in written form. Maybe a listener drew them while listening to a story or fable – or just for fun.
