Sesostris I (1971 - 1928 BC)

- Object description
12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom
Under Sesostris I Egypt began opening up to the outside world following the turbulent times of the First Intermediate Period. Copper from Sinai and cedar wood from Syria was once again reaching Egypt. Sesostris I led several wars against the Nubians in the south. It was here, in Nubia, that the Egyptians mined gold and where many fortifications were built to protect the border and the interests of Egypt.
Sesostris I also built temples in most of the larger cities of Egypt. The temple at Thebes (Karnak), built for the God of Amun-Re, became the most famous. The temple eventually grew into a vast temple complex where virtually every king erected either a pylon, chapel or an obelisk.
