Egypten 1.7 :: A changing society
- Object description
As a result of increasing contacts through trade, ceramic vessels began spreading north from Upper Egypt. In the wake of this, a new social order followed, with a small group of people gaining ever more power.
The towns of Naqada and Hierakonpolis stood at the forefront of this social change. Here, an elite group of people was acquiring more and more resources and power. Members of this elite had larger graves built, which they filled with a growing number of increasingly sophisticated funerary objects. Some of the graves were filled with objects that had been imported from far afield. These objects were important status symbols.
Jewellery and amulets in the shape of animals, associated with different gods, have been found in both graves and temples. Local gods were often combined into a more complex pantheon of gods. The ruler seemed as the link between the worlds of humans and gods. The falcon and bull became important symbols for this emerging kingship.
