An exhibition of female knowledge and creativity in the oasis Siwa.
In Siwa, far out in the Egyptian Sahara, women have for centuries maintained the ancient knowledge of embroidery as protection against the desert's dangers. The intricate patterns was once considered to be an effective defense against both evil beings and envious glances. The embroidery has now lost some of its older meaning, but the symbols and their names still provides insight into a magical world of ideas with roots in North Africa's Berber culture.
The exhibition features a collection of embroidered costumes and accessories from Siwa from World Culture Museum collections. It is about the importance of birds, spiders and scissors. And if the collars with the ability to lure away evil spirits.
