Object description

An exhibition of female knowledge and creativity in the oasis Siwa.

In Siwa, far out in the Egyptian Sahara, women have for centuries maintained the ancient knowledge of embroidery as protection against the desert's dangers. The intricate patterns was once considered to be an effective defense against both evil beings and envious glances. The embroidery has now lost some of its older meaning, but the symbols and their names still provides insight into a magical world of ideas with roots in North Africa's Berber culture.

The exhibition features a collection of embroidered costumes and accessories from Siwa from World Culture Museum collections. It is about the importance of birds, spiders and scissors. And if the collars with the ability to lure away evil spirits.

Magiska mönster - En utställning om kvinnlig kunskap och kreativitet i oasen Siwa.

I Siwa, långt ute i egyptiska Sahara, har kvinnor i århundraden bevarat en urgammal kunskap om broderi som skydd mot öknens faror. De invecklade mönstren ansågs förr vara ett effektivt försvar mot både elaka väsen och avundsjuka blickar. Broderiet har idag förlorat en del av sin äldre innebörd, men symbolerna och deras benämningar ger fortfarande inblick i en magisk idévärld med rötter i Nordafrikas berberkultur.

I utställningen visades en samling broderade dräkter och accessoarer från Siwa ur Världskulturmuseernas samlingar. Den handlar om betydelsen av fåglar, spindlar och saxar. Och om kragar med förmågan att lura bort onda andar.

Magiska mönster öppnade 22 februari 2020 på Medelhavsmuseet.
