This cup has a wide mouth with a straight rim. A protruding band encircles the vessel at the neck. The narrow waist divides the body of the cup into two sections, of which the upper section is larger than the lower section. The sides swell below the waist, then taper down to a flat base. The surface is covered with an accidental, natural ash glaze that formed during firing and has a brownish-black colour. From a breakage at the mouth, the dark-purplish body material is exposed. Coarse remains of sand adhere to the flat base. Cups of this kind were found in the lower current of the Nakdong river.
Although shapes vary, cups of the Silla kingdom and the Gaya confederacy can be largely categorized into cups with or without handle, with a hole on the side or without, as well as cups with a flat or a rounded base (cups with a rounded base would have been placed on a stand). While highly ornate cups on pedestals, some with figurative ornaments or formed in the shape of horns, were produced for a ceremonial purpose, the more plane cups as the above-described were probably intended as ordinary drinking vessels for water or alcohol.
