This bowl has an upright rim and elegantly curved sides. The interior of the bowl is decorated with carefully carved designs inlaid with white slip (Korean: sanggam). Two concentric rings surrounded by a band of yeouidu (cloud-shaped wish-granting symbols) form the center. The walls are adorned with loosely arranged cloud motifs, enclosed by three rings below the rim. The only decoration on the exterior are four incised parallel lines encircling the body of the bowl. The bowl is coated in a crackled, greenish-tinged glaze. On the exterior, the surface is curdled and has a brownish tone, probably as a result of overfiring.
Sanggam literally means image (sang) and intaglio or inlay (gam), the inlaying of one material into another. In the case of celadon wares, the sanggam technique involves the process of carving and impressing decorative motifs onto the drying clay and then filling in the shapes with white slip or red ocher clay (fires to black). After glazing and firing, the white and black slip areas would stand out from the body material and create a vivid decorative effect. Sanggam as a decoration technique for celadon wares developed and proliferated in the 12th and 13th century during the Goryeo dynasty (918-1932) and is a unique and representative craft of Goryeo arts.
