This portrait was painted in ink and colours on silk. It shows the sitter slightly turned to the right, in the three-quarter pose, sitting on a folding chair with a high back. He is wearing official attire consisting of a dark green robe (Korean: danryeong) with a chilbo (Seven Treasures) and cloud pattern and a black ceremonial hat (Korean: samo) which has a low front and a high back as well as wing-shaped flaps (Korean: yanggak) covered with patterned silk. A rank badge with the image of two cranes attached to the robe and a blue belt embellished with red patterned gold plates identify him as a civil official of the second grade. The official’s feet can be seen below the hem of the robe resting on a decorated footstool. The sitter fills almost the whole space of the painting and the background is blank. Firm lines describe the shape of the face, and the eyes, nose and mouth. Wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, and the texture of the skin were carefully indicated with numerous carefully drawn thin lines. Notably, the eye sockets were outlined with a rather sharp, clear circular line. The painter meticulously painted the facial hair of the eyebrows, moustache and beard with single, fine strokes of the brush. On the forehead, the edge of a net band is shown which holds the hair together under the hat. In addition to great attention to detail and effective use of colours, the artist applied light shading in the face and in the outline and folds of the robe for further enhancing the realistic appearance of the sitter.
Neither the artist nor the sitter could be identified. The rather schematic appearance of the face and the use of many fine strokes to represent the skin could suggests that it was made in the late 18th or early 19th century. This painting would have served as an ancestral portrait and hung in a shrine to commemorate and worship the deceased during ancestral rituals. Honoring and paying respect to one’s ancestors is an essential part of Confucianism, the state ideology of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). Ancestral portraits therefore played an important role in recording the appearance and rank of the ancestors of the family lineage.
Anni Kalbak's collection (purchased)
Anni Kalbak (born Anni Steinert Sørensen) was the wife of Dr Kaj Algot Kalbak (1909–1992), a Danish medical doctor, who worked as chief physician and head of the Department for Clinical Microbiology at the National Medical Center in Seoul from 1958 to 1962. The establishment of the National Medical centre (NMC) was a joint medical project between the Scandinavian countries, the UNKRA (United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency) and the Korean government. The Swedish contribution to the NMC was a continuation of the Swedish Red Cross Hospital in Busan that was operated during and after the Korean war (1950–1958). While living in Korea, Dr Kalbak built a collection of over 500 objects, including archaeological and ethnographic material and art objects, from a period spanning from the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE) to the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) that he presumably purchased from antique shops. It can be assumed that Anni Kalbak acquired objects for her own collection during this time, perhaps from the same shops. After returning to Denmark, Dr Kalbak donated his collection to the National Museum of Denmark. Anni Kalbak’s collection of more than 90 objects was purchased by the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in 1987. Her collection includes bronze objects from the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), a great variety of ceramic objects from the Three Kingdoms period, and the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, and a collection of over 40 paintings from the Joseon dynasty. Especially the acquisition of the painting collection held significance for the Museum as there were not many Korean paintings in the collection up to that time.
