Earlier this week, the opening ceremony for “Beijing on Water”, an exhibition with photographs by Osvald Sirén, was held at IKEA:s Livat Shopping Centre in Beijing.
Per Augustsson, Ambassador of Sweden to China, Ms. Cindy Ruan, Vice President of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs at IKEA China, and Ms. Celia Zhou, Meeting Place Manager of Livat Beijing, delivered the opening remarks. Mr. Lars Ulrik Thom, founder of Beijing Postcard, delivered a short talk on Osvald Sirén and the Old Beijing, as well as a guided tour for the attending guests.
Osvald Sirén was an art historian, sinologist and photographer from Sweden, known for his pioneering work in Chinese art. His trip to China left behind a large number of photographs that record Chinese culture and architectural heritage. The exhibition, “Beijing on Water”, features 15 rare photographs taken by Osvald Sirén in the early 20th century. Through his lens, we can glimpse Beijing’s city moats and daily life in old Beijing.
The ambassador said in his speech: "This year, Sweden and China celebrate 75 years of bilateral relations. On 9 May 1950, Sweden became the first western country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. The event today symbolises both the longstanding cultural ties between our two nations, through Osvald Sirén’s work, and our important trade relations, through IKEA."
The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing – in partnership with The National Museums of World Culture, Sweden, IKEA, Livat and Stey
The exhibition will run until June 30, 2025. (LinkedIn 2025-06)
