This bowl has a straight rim and sides that taper down in a curve to the base and the foot. A slip inlay technique called "sanggam" was applied for decorating the surface of the bowl with motifs of phoenixes and chrysanthemums. On the interior, a double ring collared with a band of yeouidu (cloud-shaped well-wishing symbols) is placed at the center, followed by a wide register with three flying phoenixes amidst clouds, enclosed by three concentric rings below the rim. The exterior surface bears three equidistant medallions of chrysanthemum flowers inside a double-ring, framed above and below by two sets of double-lines. Except for the phoenixes, the motifs were stamped and not individually incised. The greenish tinged glaze is pooling heavily (especially on the exterior) impairing the clarity of certain decorative elements. Two gaps in the glaze on the exterior of the bowl reveal the body material with the inlaid slip. The footrim has been wiped free of glaze and remains of kiln grit adhere to the glazed base and the foot.
This bowl was produced in the late Goryeo period, when the inlaid designs on celadon ceramics became more crowded and stamps began to be used for repetitive patterns. In later Goryeo celadon wares, the color of the glaze changes from a bluish-green, jade-like color to a more greyish-green.
Sanggam literally means image (sang) and intaglio or inlay (gam), the inlaying of one material into another. In the case of celadon wares, the sanggam technique involves the process of carving and impressing decorative motifs onto the drying clay and then filling in the shapes with white slip or red ocher clay (fires to black). After glazing and firing, the white and black slip areas would stand out from the body material and create a vivid decorative effect. Sanggam as a decoration technique for celadon wares developed and proliferated in the 12th and 13th century during the Goryeo dynasty (918-1932) and is a unique and representative craft of Goryeo arts.
