Object description

* "Catlinit", efter G. Catlin, am. målare och etnograf (Nationalencyklopedin), kallas i USA för "pipestone". Enligt Nationalencklopedin är det en röd hårdpackad lera som finns i Minnesota i mellanvästern USA. Dock i de flesta fall är catlinit eller pipestone refererad till som litiskt material, som mjuk sedimentariskt stenart.

Den är lagom mjuk för att kunna hugga i och forma. Dessutom har den varit en viktig bytesvara för indianstammar (främst prarieområdena) i Nordamerika, framför allt de olika Sioux stammar som var mästare på att tillverka pipor.
