Kaffekanna gjord av mässing. Den är köpt i Mecka.

Ordet kaffe kom till europeiska språk via turkiskans kahve. Det är i sin tur en variant av ett arabiskt ord, qahwah. Det råder delade meningar om ordets ursprung. Enligt vissa kommer det från verbet qahiya som betyder ”att inte vara hungrig”, eller så kan det vara från ordet quwwah som betyder styrka.

Ytterligare en teori säger att drycken ursprungligen kom från kungariket Kaffa i sydöstra Etiopien, där också kaffeplantan växer vilt. Därifrån togs kaffeplantan till arabiska halvön och år 1414 omnämns kaffe från Mecka. Det blev sedan mycket populärt i det osmanska riket. Kaffehusen ansågs dock utmana ordningen och under sultan Murad IV tid på 1600-talet var kaffehandel belagt med dödsstraff.

Till Europa kom kaffet dels genom det osmanska riket, dels från den jemenistiska hamnstaden Mocka. Coffea Arabica är den äldsta kända kaffearten, och anses vara den finaste.

The word “coffee” entered European languages via the Turkish word kahve, which is in turn a variant of an Arabic word, qahwah.

Scholarly opinion is divided on the origins of the word. Some maintain that it comes from the verb qahiya, which means “to have no appetite”, others that it comes from quwwah, which means “strength”. Another theory is that the drink originally came from the Kingdom of Kaffa in southeastern Ethiopia, where coffee plants grow wild.

The coffee plant was imported from there to the Arabian Peninsula, and coffee from Mecca is mentioned as early as 1414. It subsequently grew very popular in the Ottoman Empire. Coffeehouses were considered a challenge to the existing order, however, and during the reign of Sultan Murad IV in the 17th century, dealing in coffee was punishable by death.

Coffee came to Europe both via the Ottoman Empire and via the Yemeni port of Mocha. Coffea Arabica is the oldest know coffee variant and is considered the finest.
