Object description

Votivmålning på trä, ema. 10,3 cm bred. Visar en oxe, ushi. Målningar av detta slag hör till den japanska folkkonsten och de är mycket vanliga i buddhisttempel och shintohelgedomar. ema betyder egentligen "hästbild". En del ema visar också hästar.

60.4.6 är målad i svart, grått, vitt,svagt grönt och cinnober.

"...the type known as ema. These paintings are votive pictures and are found in great quantities in Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. The term ema literally means 'horse picture', and though some of them actually portray horses, countless other subjects are also represented. The significance of the horse can be traced back to ancient times when this valuable animal was given as an offering to the gods."

Beskrivning: Jaap Langewis, född 1902, död 1973, holländare, Zaandam, har studerat textil- och färgteknik i Kyoto, Japan, under 1950-talet. Under 1960-talet befann han sig i Zaandam. Under åren 1956-63 sålde han ett stort antal föremål till olika museer i Europa.
