Object description

Amulett, skyddar mot tjuvar. 52.15.14-15 Charms for use against burglars. The bundle of sticks is tied up with thread. The bundle of sticks is tied by thread attached to small cotton packets containing verses from the Qu´ran. They are buried beneath the threshold of a house, >

and a large part of their power consists in the mystery which surrounds the means whereby the sticks and dharm-packets are packed into the bottle. Made by a few learned men (Malamai i.e. Mu´alim), they are not only expensive themselves, but the course of instruction in their manufacture is reputed by the hausa to be one of the most costly for the preparation of a single type of charm or medicine. Note also the Qur´anic verses written on the sticks in No. 15. Made in Zaria City. No. 14 purchased from a trader in Zaria. I glasflaskan ligger koranverser upprullade på pinnar i en bunt. Liknande flaskor har använts som amuletter, eller skydd mot tex tjuvar och grävdes ner framför tröskeln till huset. Kraften låg i processen att tillverka amuletten – något som endast en specialist kunde göra.
