Object description

Rektangulär låg träsk med lock. På locket ett handtag. Lock och sidor snidade i lågrelief. Geometriska mönster och flätmönster. Storlek: 23.5 cm x 11 cm. Utsidorna färgade i mörkbrunt och patinerade. Rött färgstoff i håligheterna på sidorna. Rött färgstoff också inne i

asken, särskilt på lockets undersida. S. k. tukula-ask. tukula är ett färgstoff som erhålles från Baphia nitida, vars trä på engelska kallas "camwood". "The Bushongo treat all their carved boxes and other utensils, as well as their own skins, with tukula, or powered red camwood mixed with palmoil. Assiduous rubbing with this substance imparts in a few months a characteristis patina suggesting considerable age. many of the lidded boxes were made to hold tukula; some of the thin, rectangular forms are made for use as razor boxes."
