Object description: Black figured lekythos with white ground on body. Slightly thickned outturned rim with flat upper part, concave to convex neck with a bulge on the middle. Flat shoulder and long narrow body sloping towards flat foot. Band handle from shoulder bended in towards base of neck. Black paint on rim apart from flat upper part and on band handle. Shoulder has a row of vertical lines, a row of dots and a band of rays. Figured scene is on white ground framed by a meander and three broad black bands. Lower part of body is black apart from two smaller reserved bands. Upper side of flat base is black and lower part of edge of base. Figured scene shows from left to right a naked youth going towards the right carrying a clamyx over the right arm and a spear with the spear head pointing backwards in his left. Next is a woman dressed in a himation playing the flute. Her hair is gathered in a bun at the back and she has a band over her forehead. In front is a young man dressed in a short himation carrying in his hand a lyre. Behind all three are lines of wine.

Study Gallery

Description: Upstairs, in interaction with the Baghdad Cafe, opened in February 2009, the upper gallery. A rich variety of objects retrieved from the museum's storerooms, many of them shown for the first time. A series of booths filled to the brim with beautiful vases functions as a traditional study collection of ancient ceramics. Other booths highlights the thematic elements of the ancient world: the subject of everyday and festive, and images of gods, humans and animals. Comments

Possibly a fake decoration as white area is white shellack and the incised lines are strange. The figures are partly fine drawn, partly very sketchy as being from various periods. The vase is though genuine. Should be x-rayed.

; A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.

Condition

Almost entirely preserved but handle has been broken off. Lots of naggigs and chips at rim, neck, body and base. Paint very worn, though black paint on white ground seems to be more stable possibly due to later painting.
