MM 2014:002 :: relief, stele

Object description

The stele space is divided into three features, a plinth, a image and a pediment. The pediment encompass a round shield. The pediment was originally crowned by three akroterion; the only one remaining is situated to the right.

The image depict a woman; dressed in a garment (himation?) covering her body and arms. Her head is tilted slightly downwards facing a dog to the left. Her long hair is flying lose but is partly covered by a ribbon on her forehead. Her large right hand holds a bunch of grapes or possibly a small basket. Her left hand holds a round object, most likely an apple pressed to her bosom. To the left she is flanked by a dog facing her. Bellow the figural motive follow a plinth with an inscription in Greek letters.

The letter in the text range from 1,5-3 cm. The text on the stela is a dedication to a dead sister. Probably provincial work.

Condition

Two of the ornaments above the pediment are damaged. A diagonal, mended crack runs across the inscription. The crack is mended and do not prevent reading or interpretation of the text. One character in the top line of the text is eroded.
